De intieme DoodDying With Dignity
"Nobody knows where this last journey will take us." With these words, Dutch oncologist Joep Douma accompanies his patients to their death. "To die with dignity," is the wish of some of the patients suffering from incurable cancers. Only recently has this become a legally possible in the Netherlands. Each year, approximately 2000 people in the Netherlands die by way of active euthanasia. It's no absolute right for the patient and no duty for the doctor. It is discussible, however, if all legal criteria, like unbearable suffering, hopelessness and a convincing self-determination of the patient, are met. Dying with dignity illustrates how the request to die by the affected persons is treated.
