De Florida a CoahuilaFrom Florida to Coahuila
IIn the Coahuila region of northern Mexixo, in the village of El Nacimiento de los Negros live the descendants of those whom the Americans called the "Black Seminoles." Their ancestors fled the plantations of South Carolina and Georgia to seek refuge in the Spanish colony of Florida. Close to the Seminole Indians, they nevertheless preserved their culture and traditions. In 1850, the Mascogos - as they were called in Mexico - demanded asylum from the Mexican government. The latter granted them land and Mexican citizenship, in exchange for their collaboration as border guards. Today, El Nacimiento maintains relations with a group of American Seminoles in Bracketville, Texas. This tale raises questions about traditional notions of nationalism.
