Das Ministerium für Staatssicherheit - Alltag einer BehördeThe Ministry of State Security - All in a Day's Work
The activities of its State Security Ministry are the best-kept secrets of former East Germany. Even those who worked there had only a vague notion of the vast power of their institution, which employed some 100,000 agents. Nine of them, generals and top civil servants, agreed to be interviewed for the film and at last lift the veil from the inner workings of the Stasi, describing the methods and daily routine of its agents. How were arrests made, how were interrogations conducted, what was the selection criteria for non-official informers, how were standard interrogations conducted in preventive detention? These model employees also recall their satisfaction when they managed to force a confession out of a prisoner, and their relationships with the minister Mielke. They also reveal how they felt about colleagues who chose to leave the service. At several points, when nostalgically remembering their former employer, these retired civil servants again wax enthusiastic and feel the need to justify their past actions.
