D'Annunzio

Gabriele D'Annunzio was born in Pescara, Italy, in 1863. Artist, poet, military hero, this genius who did everything instead of just dreaming about it contributed to writing a portion of the History of Italy. Mythicized by the French and Italian aristocracy of the late 19th century, he was later idolized by the bourgeoisie that sought to imitate him. An aristocratic writer who held the masses in contempt and cared little for the new social classes, he nurtured a way of thinking that morbidly excited the imagination of all those in the Italy of King Umberto and Giolitti who hadn't moral strength, intelligence or vitality to become like him. Thanks to his interventionist campaign during the Great War, in which-at age 52!-he served a pilot, D'Annunzio occupied a major place in Italian History. After the war and the occupation of Fiume, he settled in the magnificent villa of Vittoriale on Lake Garda where he lived in splendid isolation until his death in 1938.
