Colombia : A Nation Held to Ransom
Ingrid Betancourt ran for president in the 2002 Colombian elections, yet her whereabouts were unknown - possibly she was dead. She had been kidnapped by the FARC. Peace talks between the FARC - Latin America's oldest guerilla army - and the government collapsed in February 2002. In the chaos that followed, Ingrid was stopped on a lonely and notorious road, separated from her friends, and led away. She is one of Colombia's 15.000 kidnap victims. Her family and supporters continued her campaign - a tenacious anti-corruption stance that has made Ingrid enemies amongst the political establishment. They believe the government has no interest in Ingrid's rescue, and wait for the Farc to decide her fate.
