Chamber Music from Kuhmo Festival 2002
Every July, when the midnight sun shines, the chamber music festival of the city of Kuhmo, in northeast Finland, welcomes a dozen artists from all over the world. This world-rank festival is a haven of peace for musicians and music-lovers, who come to cultivate their great passion for new music. In 2002, the pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard and violinist Elisabeth Batiashvili, members of the Borodin Quartet, were in residence. Shostakovich, with whom they had long been close, personally supervised their work on each of these quartets. For the festival, they devoted themselves to his compositions. Their magnificent, sensitive performance of the quartet nº8 in C Minor is the subject of this film.
