Carmina Burana
The Carmina Burana have a long history: composed between the 12th and 13th century, these lyric poems and bawdy songs peddled by the Goliards, hobo scholars or Vagabond Poets, deal with love, drunkenness and gambling, parodying religious ceremonies and criticizing the social system. This collection came down to us via a manuscript that was probably written at the end of the 13th century in Austria and rediscovered in 1803 in the Benedictine monastery at Beuren (Benediktbeuren) in Bavaria. It served as the basis for the composition of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, premiered on June 8, 1937 at the Frankfurt Opera. The current version by David Bintley relates the story of three seminarians who, meeting the goddess Fortuna, succumb to mayhem and temptation. Produced for the first time in 1995, this new version is another showcase for the talents of Margaret Williams, as well as Philip Prowse's dazzling sets and costumes, and the incredible vitality of the Birmingham Royal Ballet company.
