18th April 1983. A truck filled with explosives crashed into the American Embassy in Beirut, killing 63 people, including the driver. He had sacrificed his own life in order to ensure hitting his target and causing the most deaths. This suicide bombing in Beirut has been used an example by others and copied by hundreds of other 'martyrs', for any number of causes, all over the world. A new deadly weapon had been invented. The attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on 11 September 2001 showed the world how devastatingly effective this new weapon could be. Are suicide attacks the new weapon of the poor? The atomic bomb for the underdogs of our planet? Has it become an invincible weapon?
