Bamboo Dream
According to Time magazine, Cloud Gate, which draws on Asian myth, folklore and aesthetics, is the most promising company in contemporary dance. Working with ancient beliefs and stories, artistic director Lin Hwai-min has sought to give his choreography both a contemporary and universal perspective. Bamboo Dreams is set during the Jin Dynasty (265-420 CE). To protest against the corruption of society, a group of students withdraws to live in a bamboo grove. In an abstract, lyrical register, the choreography reveals the story hidden behind each bamboo. Several scenes follow the changing seasons, and the dancers, whether in solo, duo, trio in small groups, give us a example of the company's outstanding talents and the style they excel in.
