Argentine, une démocratie en dangerArgentina, a Democracy in Danger
Buenos Aires, five days before Christmas. A disconcerting silent hangs over the city. The day before, exasperated Argentinians had plundered the supermarkets. The government reacted quickly by declaring a state of emergency. But the inhabitants of the capital were not to be fazed--the population took to the streets and poured into the town center: the famous Plaza de Mayo. Wielding pots and pans, the Argentinians demanded the withdrawal of the government. Argentina! This country cited by international organizations as the model of neo-liberal reforms and economic expansion, was now bogged down in abysmal and apparently unexpected economic and social crisis. How could a democracy strongly resembling a European nation collapse like this overnight? The riots proved that the young Argentine democracy was again in great danger. Everyone still remembered the military dictatorship and the images of the uprising followed by the brutal police repression were very worrying. How did things come to this? What happened since? What are the prospects for the months and years to come for this young, imperiled democracy?
