Arabie saoudite : le grand écart
Osama Ben laden, America's Public Enemy Number One, is a Saudi. Several members of the terrorist commando unit that attacked New York and Washingon on September 11, 2001, were also Saudis. This documentary begins with this fact which suddenly reveals the importance of this radical Islamic movement in Saudi Arabia. It comes as a surprise to Europeans, and Americans in particular, who concluded a strategic alliance with this country 50 years ago. Why, in the kingdom of petrodollars, does the richest of Muslim nations produce so much rebellion? Why is this desert, where the welfare state sees to the needs of 20 million inhabitants, accused of being a cradle of religious fundamentalism? This film seeks to explain the roots of Saudi troubles, to focus on what public opinion and the young in particular can no longer bear. Beyond the terrorist attacks that have cast a harsh light on a fragile Saudi kingdom, the film also gauges this nation's risks of imploding.
