Aside

Mario Handler shot this film over a period of 18 months, without crew, producer, director of photography, sound man, or even an assistant. Alone with a digital camera, he joined a group of outcasts who live in the suburbs of Montevideo, Uruguay. Carina, Neno and Milka are young people "del cante" whom the director defines as youths, not minors, cultural outsiders. This reportage resembles a documentary in its form: the people we see on the screen play out their own lives for the camera which shares their privacy. Handler's intention was to raise our awareness. The director in no way intervenes, except from the social and esthetic point of view. The film contains neither interviews nor archive footage. The action is lived and heard, never explained. The difficulties inherent in looking for work, the growing temptations to commit a crime, the lack of culture and knowledge of the basic principles ruling our lives are the elements this film brings out.
