Amahl and the Night Visitors

When NBC television commissioned him to write an opera for a Christmas Eve performance in 1951, Italian composer Gian Carlo Menotti sought a main concept. "The Adoration of the Magi" at the Metropolitan Museum in New York gave him the material for Ahmal and the Night Visitors, a one-act opera that he wrote in two months. He also takes inspiration from his trips to the mountain village of his youth during the Christmas period. Sung in English, this Christmas tale is meant for audiences of all ages and all musical cultures. Ahmal and the Night Visitors, or how charity and selfless love can accomplish miracles.
