A la vie, à la mort
In 1993, Philippe Pozzo di Borgo is a happy man. He is 42 and life is good to him: he is the managing director of Pommery champagnes; lives in a Paris townhouse; is happily married to Beatrice, his childhood sweetheart, with whom he adopted two children in Bogota, Laetitia and Robert Jean, because a blood disease prevents Beatrice from having children of her own. But misfortune always lurks when it is least expected: on June 23, 1993, disaster strikes--a paraglider accident leaves Philippe quadriplegic. The worst is yet to come: three years later, Beatrice dies of septicaemia. The black hole. Philippe then experiences a miracle in the form of Abdel, a cheeky and boisterous little Arab who pulls the aristocrat out of his lethargy.
