[ A]fghanistan, un Etat impossible ?
In 1973, when I was 11, I was preparing for the entrance exams at the Franco-Aghan high school in Estqlal. That same year, Daoud put an end to the monarchy by overthrowing the King, his cousin and brother-in-law. My father, a monarchist, was thrown into prison. I never understood his loyalty to the king, nor why he enjoyed saying that the military coup would cost Afghanistan an "a." Afghanistan means "the land of the Afghans." Removing an "A" it becomes "fghanistan," which literally means "land of moans and cries." The events since then have unfortunately given his pronouncement a prophetic justification. As for me, some 28 years later, I keep asking myself the same question: Why, since 1973, has Afghanistan been in a free fall ?"
