The Bell Tolls at Noon

Austria, 1945, a village in Styria. A small group of partisans roams the forests. The war is nearly over: the last contingent of the lame and the aged is rounded up by the ambitious village Nazi, game warden Fichtelhuber, in order to hunt down the partisans. Yet none wants to. Their motives: fear, cowardice, idiocy--for some also foresight; after all, the Allies are coming soon and who knows what will happen then. Even the church bell is targeted for transport -after all, the Third Reich needs cartridge cases. But peasant craftiness wins out. The women of the village seize the initiative, and the bell disappears mysteriously. When the Nazis pull out, and even the Hitler photos have disappeared, the bell reappears...
