A man of surprises, György Ligeti plays with his interpreter because his pieces are virtuosic, with the listener because he sets traps for him — sound illusions — and with himself in the game of highly personal references. These essential pages of modern piano presented by Ligeti and Pierre-Laurent Aimard are performed in a visual environment which blends the sound and the illusory. The film’s themes are multiple: an account of contemporary artistry, an illumination of reputedly difficult works, a portrait of a composer and his esthetic world.
