Traveller
The film follows the return to Ireland of Irish photographer Alen MacWeeney, who in 1965 embarked on a two-years project of photographing and recording the travellers of Dublin and Galway. Shortly afterwards he left for New York, where he began a highly successful career in commercial and fashion photography. But his photographs of the travellers and his experience of that time remained for him the pinnacle of his work. Thirty-five years later, in 1999, he made a journey back to Ireland to find out what happened to the travellers. Traveller is a personnal and lively journey into Ireland's past and the culture of travellers, a group of Irish whose lives and traditional ways have changed hugely since MacWeeney first encountered them in 1965. As he travels back to find them again, the rich archive that he collected provides the sound and images of that faraway time, juxtaposed with the people as we find them in present-day.
