Timorest : Nascita NazioneEast Timor: The Birth of a Nation
In the autumn of 1999 the world discovered the existence of a small island named Timor, when militias backed by the Indonesian army unleashed a wave of terror in the aftermath of the referendum by which 80% of the people of East Timor had voted for independence from Indonesia. In the wake of the indignation of the international community, the United Nations sent the peacekeeping force to the island. In October the Security Council set up the UNTAET, or United Nations Assistance Mission to East Timor. Its goal was to restore order on the island and escort the small nation of 800,000 people to its historic appointment with its first free elections. Two years later, Dili, the capital of East Timor, remains a stricken city. The documentary is a report on the lives of a population still traumatized by the events. The camera ventures into the island's danger zones and follows the U.N. force as it goes about its high-risk mission in a country whose future is not at all guaranteed.
