The Struma
1941, Constanta, Romania, Black Sea. Nearly 800 Romanian Jews board The Struma, a ship bound for Palestine. Engine failure forces the vessel into Istanbul Harbor but, under British pressure, Turckey refuses the desperate refugees sanctuary. The Struma languishes in port. The passengers are packed like sardines. There is no food. There are no toilets. Disease is rampant. After 2 months, the Turks tug the disabled vessel back into the Black Sea. The Struma floats aimlessly. Twelve hours laters, a soviet submarine locks on the boat. A single torpedo is fired. The sea is full with the dead and dying. Over 100 are children. There is only one survivor. He is still alive. 2000. Using information from the sole survivor, the grandson of 2 Struma passengers leads an international team of elite divers to find the gravesite of his grandparents.
