The Making of the Handmaid's Tale - The Opera
This documentary follows, stage by stage, the putting on of the opera "The Handmaid'sTale" by Paul Ruder, from the early rehearsal right up to seconds before curtain up. The opera is an Anglo-Danish co-production and the source novel is by the Canadian Margaret Atwood. The Director of the Royal Danish Opera, the librettist, the director of the production, the production designer, the lightning designer and the choreographer were all coming from England, while the composer, conductor and the opera singers as well as the opera house are Danish. The documentary includes interviews with all these people. The story of the opera closely follows Margaret Atwood's original. We are in the beginning of the 21st Century where the fanatical, religious right in the USA have violently taken power and created a theocracy. The new republic is called Gilead. One of the high points of this new dictatorship is the denying of basic human rights to women, they are no longer allowed even to read or write.
