The Jang Sun-Woo Variations
Jang Sun-Woo, born in 1952, emerged in the late 80s as one of the few people capable of transforming Korea cinema - and Korean culture in general - as South Korea began the transition from authoritarian military regime to more democratic government. Jang has kept pace with every step of the country's evolution from the rise of a new upper class and "celebrity culture" to the diminishing role of intellectuals. Each of his film is radically different in form and style from the others, but each manages to touch on one of Korean society's fault lines - which is why his work has often been seen as provocative and controversial. Throught its portrait of Jang and look back at his film, the documentary offers incidental insight into Korean society in a time of dynamic development and transition. And it finds space for the voices of many 'ordinary' Koreans.
