Roman Karmen, un cinéaste au service de la révolution
Although we are not always aware of it, the images of Roman Karmen have moulded our vision of twentieth century history. Film director and fighter, exceptionally cold-blooded cameraman, image smuggler or director with a touch of genius, from the building of socialism in the USSR in the early thirties to the barricades of Toledo during the Spanish civil war, from the Yu Nan caves - with Mao Tse Tung - , to the surrender of Von Paulus in Stalingrad, from the opening of the concentration camps to the fall of Berlin From the Vietnam Minh independence movement - with Ho Chi Minh, to the liberation of Hanoi, from the first steps of the Cuban revolution, to the defence of Salvador Allende's Unidad Popular coalition: Roman Karmen has straddled the century. He wrote the legend and when the history that he had dreamed of failed to materialise, he had no other solution but to extend his art right to the very limits of stammering. To make a novel out of his life.
