Ravi Shankar : entre deux mondes
Ravi Shankar is widely recognized as India’s greatest (living) musician. He celebrated his 80th birthday in April 2000. Filmed in India and the U.S. over a two-year period, this film synthesizes for the first time seven decades of a life in art and highlights the unique career of the master of the sitar. Shankar succeeded in combining a deep respect for the most authentic of India’s musical traditions with a mission to communicate something of the cultural richness of his country to the rest of the world. The film relates his youth in the holy city of Benares and his early years as a dancer with the acclaimed troupe of his brother, Uday, which we see here in excerpts from a film shot in Paris in 1932. With Debrenda, his older brother of 92, Shankar recalls their stay in Hollywood, where he was nearly adopted by a famous movie actress. The film shows Shankar’s many musical encounters with George Harrison and other Western musicians, the major recordings of his career, as well as carefully selected excerpts from his filmed performances, from 1954 to the present day.
