Ravel's Brain
Poetry both musical and visual informs the intimate being of a great artist who has been suddenly incapable of communicating with the outside world. During the last five years of his life, Maurice Ravel suffered from aphasia and apraxia. His brain produced music which he was unable to transcribe. This film uses Ravel's intimate thoughts and images of his house in Montfort l'Amaury and his birthplace where he felt the first symptoms of his illness. The film then takes us to Marrakech where Ravel, debilitated by illness, was so inspired by the Arab street music that he was able to compose. For the first time, we hear Ravel's final moments of musical creativity.
