Frankfurt is in the midst of the worst heat wave in 150 years. The municipal workers are on strike. As the garbage piles up, rats begin to come out of the shadows and into the streets. Soon, the rats are everywhere, crawling out of toilets, into beds. Adding to the horror is the discovery that the rats are carrying a deadly, unknown virus and that they have become agressive. Katrin, a young doctor at the local hospital, is working feverishly on a serum to fight the virus and to save her little daughter, who has also been bitten. Frank, a disaster control specialist working closely with Katrin and the city officials, realizes that conventional means of extermination are useless. His daring plan requires him to descend alone among the now millions of rats surging and heaving beneath the city...
