Petites Histoires en Turkestan
July 1932. Ella Maillart desperately seeks a way to get to Central Asia. She hopes to find a nomadic life that is still intact despite the forced settling process and modernization policy of the Soviet regime. She brings back travel impressions, accounts and many photos. Seventy years on, a traveler retraces Ella’s journey and discovers in turn a fascinating, unexpected region. The idea of a documentary structured around Ella Maillart’s travels came from the interest of comparing and contrasting two voyages in two critical moments of history. The documentary thus illustrates the changes in Central Asia and pays tribute to a woman who, standing outside the ideological battles that were tearing Europe apart, brought a fresh gaze at a region that remains to this day largely unknown to Europeans.
