Paul Andreu, le Grand Opéra de PékinPaul Andreu, the Beijing Opera
Since the building of the air terminals at Roissy, his first construction 30 years ago, Paul Andreu has continued to work the world over on spaces meant for transit and travel. In 1999, Chinese authorities opened an architectural competition for the new Peking opera house. Andreu was tempted. The stakes are considerable: it involves the construction of an opera in the heart of the city, a stone’s throw from the Forbidden City. Andreu’s project has been short-listed but Chinese authorities have doubts and have been modifying the implantation of the site. The architect must cope with constraints and short deadlines: the building must be completed within three years. Between the dream and the reality there stand many problems to resolve, problems that are technical, economic, esthetic and practical. It is this underestimated work that the film follows from the drawing boards and models to the reality, from projects and dreams to the concrete—here is the true work of the architect.
