Napoléon, adulation et aversion

Napoleon, visionary or despot? Guillaume Durand directs an imaginary trial of the great man and calls on witnesses from the past and commentators of today. In order to recapture the spirit of Napoleon, the film is based on popular art representations of the Emperor : cult objects, naïve imagery, primitive cinema, theatre and songs, advertising, puppets and dolls, paper, woods or tin soldiers...almost a Punch and Judy show. The shadow theatre entitled "L'Epopée" -The Epic- is mixed with the figurines of the Emperor's contemporaries. All are invited to reinterpret the deep-rooted mythology of Napoleon.
