Mirabella / Sindelfingen
This film is about European migration and identity of people lost between two worlds. Mirabella Imbaccari is a village in the heart of Sicily, with an antiquated agriculture. Only 4,000 of the official 10,000 inhabitants live there on a regular basis, hopelessly lost in that European periphery. 2000 km north: Sindelfingen, near Stuttgart, one of the most powerful economic areas in the whole Europe, home of Mercedes, Porsche and IBM: 60,000 inhabitants, 58,000 jobs. A regular and an anarchic transport system links these two towns. That's because most of the 6,000 people missing from Mirabella live in the Sindelfingen area, where they have been working at the Mercedes factory since the 50s. These people built up a second "Mirabella" in Germany with an astonishing and still growing communications-system. Today, three generation later, we discover an absurd, ambivalent situation, too closely linked to Sicily to allow a new identity to emerge, yet too far to turn back.
