Michelangelo Antonioni
Ferrara. A strange province, where the memory of a somptuous past inspires the mind, where a feeling for the landscapes moves people to paint, write novels and make films. Not far from here, Luchino Visconti directed Obsession and the young Antonioni spent two years on his documentary Gente del Po, with its suggestiveness and its novel hints of neorealism which was shortly to emerge. It can be tedious watching an Antonioni film, just as it can be tedious reading Dante's "Divine Comedy" or the poetry of Leopardi, since they touch those beautiful, mysterious parts of ourselves.
