Martin Gester, la passion du baroque
Conductor Martin Gester and his ensemble "Le Parlement de Musique", which is made up of artists from a number of countries, have been devoted to baroque music for ten years. By performing forgotten scores and reinterpreting many works, they have successfully developed a universal aspect of baroque music, a specifically European musical style. "Le Parlement de Musique" has not yet achieved widespread recognition from the media, but its demanding, original approach to an often previously unknown repertoire has led to appearances at numerous European festivals, more than twenty records and the acclaim of international specialist critics. The film focuses on Johann Sebastian Bach's "Passion according to St John", from the rehearsals to the concert performance, giving a fresh view of the work by following all the meanders of baroque music. Seeing and studying the baroque repertoire from this point of view improves our understanding of it. Visually, this documentary film unravels like the rhythmic development of the components of a concerto: one idea overlays another; the colors are sober, autumnal; the silence of the library, with its facsimiles of scores, acts as a counterpoint to the musical movement. And at the heart of the story stands the impassioned figure of Martin Gester.
