Manhattan Charity
At once a celebration of the founding individualism of the United States and the consecration of capitalism, philanthropy lies at the heart of American society. It also has become, for those who could afford it, a way of life and a full time occupation: in New York, the rich and powerful have to choose causes to take up or risk being ostracized. This film throws a spotlight on these happy few: the five people whose paths cross in Manhattan Charity are part of an elite who fund and control the most prestigious cultural and educational institutions of New York. Their life is measured out in grandiose charity galas, unending solicitations that must be sorted out, board meetings, “visits in the field” in Harlem or the Bronx, and banquet dinners in honor of their past time… Do they practice philanthropy by altruism, as a distraction, to pay less taxes or to affirm their status?
