Majestät brauchen SonneHis Majesty Needs Sunshine
Drawing on digitally remastered silent archival footage, the filmmaker looks at the disastrous predilection of Germany's last Kaiser, Wilhelm II, to theatricalize his life as well as his government and nation. The most filmed and photographed personality of the early 20th century, His Majesty had to look his best during his spectacular public appearances. After a 30-year reign and his forced abdication at the end of the first world war, he went into exile until 1941 in a lavish castle at Huis Doorn in the Netherlands, surrounded by the accessories and images of his years of glory. He chose his own epitaph: "Don't congratulate me, because I need no exultation. Don't judge me, because I shall be judged."
