Mah Damba, une griotte en exil
In Mali, they call them "Djelis"; to Westerners, they are known as "griots," that caste of masters of the word, who are storytellers, musicians, mediators, or genealogists of the nobility. They say that when a griot dies, it's like an entire library going up in smoke, or that a griot is a needle that sews. Mah Damba is a griotte. She shares her time between Paris and Mali and her voice embodies all the overlapping musicality of Mali and France. The film follows her in her daily life, between Paris and Bamako, between song and family life, between polygamy and international career... But being a griot means being an icon of ancestral traditions. How does one reconcile this role and living in present-day Paris?
