Les Silences de l'Église
"The percentage of pedophile priests must be about the same as the average number in the population—1% of the French clergy". In other words, the Catholic Church is a social institution like any other... Father Stanislas Lalanne, spokesman for the French episcopacy. The statistics are upsetting and that may explain the silence of the Church concerning the exact number of its victims. Probably in the hundreds, if you include the suffering parents. Doubly betrayed in their faith by an institution to which they have entrusted part of their children's education. This inquiry sets out to demonstrate the guilty silences of the Church in the face of a phenomenon they know has existed in its ranks for many years. Today, faced with this wall of silence, a major change has come about: families and victims are speaking out and seeking justice. This change is obviously forcing the Church to break its silence. In November 2000, bishops met in Lourdes to recognize the seriousness of the situation. They now officially admit to cases of sexual violence and pedophilia. The Church even commissioned a report on pedophilia in the Church, which was distributed to all the bishops. But the openness stops there, even if some of the clergy, especially young priests, seem to have gauged the seriousness of the matter.
