Les Prématurés, 10 ans plus tard

They weigh just over 500 grams, hardly more than a pound of butter, when they're born after 22 to 28 weeks in their mother's womb. They're called micro-preemies, and doctors work furiously to save their lives. But what happens to these babies after the miracle of their birth ? In the past years, studies have focused on their lives after the miracle. We've discovered that these children may suffer problems ranging from the slight (learning disabilities) to the severe (blindness and cerebral palsy). Are these kids and their families paying too steep a price? For most parents, the risks are worth it. They don't doubt their child's quality of life. But these parents wonder about the information the medical community gives them. Do their doctors tell them the whole truth? The parents are firmly convinced they should have the final say in wether to save the life of a micro-preemie. Doctors, meanwhile, are torn. Scientific advances enable them to save babies born earlier and earlier. Yet studies show that these kids may face severe disabilities. Uncertainty prevails because doctors often cannot predict what lies ahead for these tiny babies.
