Thanks to highly specialized new technologies, we can now inspect the mother’s stomach and see if the fetus has any deformities. When an examination shows a perfect baby, no problem. But when an anomaly is detected, the parents must make a terrible choice: interrupt the pregnancy or take the risk of bringing a handicapped child into the world. If the prenatal diagnosis allows the parents to prepare for a malformed baby, it especially confronts them with new responsibilities and new alternatives for which the legal framework remains to be defined. Choosing to interrupt a voluntary pregnancy is always a painful, almost impossible, decision. Their dignity and courage commands our respect.
