Le Mystère Pol Pot
Who was Pol Pot, the criminal leader of the Red Khmer Rouge? This portrait draws on archival footage and rare eyewitness accounts, including the only interview with Pol Pot made before his death by American journalist Nate Thayer. Pol Pot, whose real name was Saloth Sar, remains an enigma. No other revolutionary leader has left so few traces. Pol Pot almost always refused to give interviews, not only when he was in power but even later on, when he took refuge with his troops in the Cambodian forests. But in 1997, the Khmer Rouge movement imploded. Pol Pot was arrested and arraigned before a people's tribunal in the forest, near the Thai border. He was charged with the murder of one of his associates. Nate Thayer was authorized to attend the trial and later to interview Pol Pot. This film uses previously-unseen documents on the life of Brother Number One, from his birth to his death: his studies in Cambodia and France, his early political and military experiences, his complex relations with China and Vietnam. The very personality of Pol Pot is probably the most disconcerting. Just to look at him, Pol Pot looked like a pleasant grandfather who wouldn't hurt a fly. The discrepancy between his courtesy and his legendary cruelty has always amazed and deceived his entourage.
