Le Jeune Casanova
Venice, mid-eighteenth century. Now returned to his hometown, Giacomo Casanova is a young man in love with women, an adventurer who plays violin in an orchestra led by his adopted family, the Ballettis. Casanova's fate takes a turn when he saves the life of the French Ambassador to Venice, Bernis. The two quickly become close friends and Bernis is keen to find a position for Giacomo, his "spiritual son". But a woman comes between them: Elena Foscarini, the Ambassador's secret mistress, falls in love with Casanova. Unable to bear this victory for youth, Bernis betrays Casanova, who is sent to the formidable Lead's prison. After more than a year's incarceration, Giacomo manages to escape. Warned by Elena in a letter that Bernis was behind his imprisonment without trial, he goes to Paris to find him, exact his revenge and make his fortune. To this end, he makes use of the violent rivalry between Madame de Pompadour, the royal mistress whose influence is fading, and Bernis, now Minister of Foreign Affairs. In return for Madame Pompadour's support for his projected first Parisian lottery, he seduces a penniless young aristocrat, Charlotte de L'Estrade. Casanova is caught in his own trap and falls in love with Charlotte...
