Pulmonary endarterectomy is the greatest high-risk form of surgery today. It involves removing tiny blood clots that affect the lungs, settling in arteries a millimeter in diameter. To reach these arteries, surgeons must stop the blood circulation. To protect the organs and the brain in particular, they place the patient in a state of hibernation under 18 degree temperature. It is a kind of clinical death. One of out every 10 patients dies under surgery or in the hours following it. But this surgery is the only chance of survival for patients suffering from chronic pulmonary thromboembolism, a rare disease. Doctors say that people suffering from this ailment have no more than two years to live after the first symptoms appear. Bernard, who has been sick for several months, has been warned of the risks. It’s now up to him to take a decision. In reality, he has no other choice. He knows that no medical treatment can save him and that his days are numbered.
