La Photo déchirée, chronique d'une émigration clandestine
In the early 60s, thousands of Portuguese illegally arrived in France. They fled poverty, war and repression. Entrusting their lives to unscrupulous smugglers, they had to cross the Iberian peninsula with the Portuguese and Spanish police on their trail. For many, the journey ended in disaster. The director remembers having heard stories of these terrible voyages as a child in a shantytown. Forty years on, he set out to investigate these stories of his childhood to understand what led to this unprecedented emigration in which so many “voted with their feet” against Salazar. Mixing childhood memories and historical inquiry, he sought out images of this unprecedented exodus of post-war Europe.
