La MaledizioneThe Curse
Nigeria is one of the world's greatest oil producers. Its oil fields are concentrated in the south of the country, along the delta of the River Niger. This oil, however, has not brought wealth to the local populations. Instead, it has served to finance the power bases of one of the fiercest dictatorships of the continent, which only recently was replaced by the embryo of a democracy, and to fill the coffers of some of the most important oil companies in the world. The protests of the local populations against the exploitation of the resources and the environmental pollution have always, as they still are today, been put down with bloodshed. in the meantime, hundreds of women and children die in the flames of horrible fires that break out along the oil pipelines. These are poor people from the villages who die attempting to steal a few buckets of oil where there are leaks in the pipelines from corrosion or sabotage. Silvestro Montanaro, together with his vrew, tells of this dramatic situation, revealing the responsabilities of the oil companies, but also the contracdictions of a frightening and cruel war among the local communities.
