La Grande Aventure de la presse filméeThe Great Adventure of Newsreels
One of the singularities of the 20th century is that its history was documented by motion picture newsreels before television took over from it. The aim of this four-part documentary series is to retrace this saga using motion picture images and the reminiscences of its main players, thus highlighting the role these images have played in our visual memory. Part one covers the pioneering days of early cinema, up to the first world war. The second part takes us from the Great War to the twilight years of the silent movies, when newsreels were the eyes of the world. The third part explores the golden age of sound newsreels up to the outbreak of World War II. This conflict, which seemed to open a new era for newsreels, in fact marked the beginning of the end of their hegemony. The weekly newsreel would soon be replaced by television and the evening news broadcast.
