La Belle Province
The tragic news broke on the night of 17 October 1970: Pierre Laporte, Quebec's immigration and labor minister, who had been kidnapped a week earlier by the Quebec Liberation Front, had been found dead in the trunk of a Chevrolet which had been used for the kidnapping. Quebec and the rest of the country were plunged into a state of shock. For the first time, a politician had died in an abduction. Coming 48 hours after the enactment of a war measures bill, Pierre Laporte's death didn't put an end to Quebec's political crisis. But it undoubtedly was its darkest chapter. That day, la "Belle Province" didn't only lose a minister, it lost its innocence. Drawing on numerous archival documents and rare interviews with the key players in the October Crisis, this film retraces the tragic circumstances in which Pierre Laporte lost his life.
