L'Étrange Destin du Colonel Jin Xing

Colonel Jin Xing: a Unique Destiny

In Shanghai, Jin Xing is the choreographer and first dancer of the only modern ballet company to be authorized in China. As such, she is already a star, recognized throughout the country. But the destiny of Jin Xing is even stranger than that. Jin Xing was born... a boy. She is in fact a transsexual. This film is the story of a transformation and the upheavals it brought about in the Chinese mentality. It’s the story of a little boy, born in Manchuria to a Confucian soldier father, who at the age of nine was admitted to the dance school of the Popular Army. At 18, Xing Jin— “golden star” in Manchurian—was dubbed China’s greatest dancer and promoted to the rank of colonel. A scholarship took him to New York where he discovered contemporary ballet, freedom, and sexual tolerance. The Chinese Communist Party ,which has never been known for tolerance, had no complaints about a transsexual becoming the standard-bearer of a new culture.
