L'École des Femmes
Arnolphe, an aging bachelor, has brought up Agnes, a young girl of humble background. He intends to marry her but he learns that she is in love with Horace and wants to marry him. Arnolphe tries in vain to stop this union. The ruses Agnes and Horace use always get the better of Arnolphe’s vigilance. He then starts to talk about sending Agnes to a convent. As for Horace, an arranged marriage is already planned for the young man. But the young girl who is to wed Horace is none other than Agnes, the daughter of Enrique, a friend of Horace’s father. He had entrusted his daughter to a peasant woman, who, in turn, “gave” her to Arnolphe.
