Madame de Maintenon is dying. She looks back... She looks back at the extraordinary destiny that took her, a young orphan begging for food who married the stunted poet Scarron, to the lavish apartments of the Chateau of Versailles. Now a widow, Françoise d'Aubigné performs some services for the ladies of the nobility. One of them takes her to a ball at Versailles. Françoise befriends Madame de Montespan, Louis XIV's new mistress, who asks her to secretly look after the royal bastards. Françoise, who devotes herself body and soul to the education of her beloved children, has the opportunity to see the King and speak to him. When he recognizes the children he had with Madame de Montespan, Françoise moves to Versailles as the court governess. During a chance meeting on the chateau grounds, Françoise d'Aubigné, a keen-spirited and noble-hearted woman, modest and retiring, gives herself to her King. Her favor with him continues to grow. Based on the novel by Françoise Chandernagor, this two part film relates the extraordinary rise of Madame de Maintenon, a young orphan who used her intelligence and resourcefulness to reach Versailles and become the mistress of Louis XIV.
