For many years war photographer Marc Hoogsteyns roamed the world's battlefields in search of adventures and kicks. Burma, Cambodia, Lebanon, Chile, Kurdistan were his playground. 1994 was the turning point. While covering the genocide in Rwanda, Marc fell in love with a Tutsi woman soldier whom he married and soon had chidren with. For this film - during a three months period- Marc shared the poor life of Boniface, his wife's uncle, who lived in a refugee camp in Rwanda but decided to take his family back to his village, deep in the Masisi region in the Congo. In 1994, Marc filmed Boniface for the first time in the Mudende refugee camp where Hutu extremists killed 1.648 people. Amongst the dead were many members of Boniface's family. Mudende 2000 became the starting point for a dangerous and revealing trip back to the Congo.
