Histoire en musiques - Grèce : une nuit sans luneHistory in Musics - Greece: Moonless Night
For 50 years a group, whose existence was precarious and miserable and whose traditions were threatened, managed to invent a musical solution to its situation all by itself without any recognition or interest. "Rebetiko" was first the music of the outcasts, then became the music of a social class and finally an art crystallizing national identity. It is a syncretic form of music bearing the roots of the Orient and Byzantium and in which the countryside feeds the cities so as to invent a Pan-Hellenic urban modernism. "Rebetiko" is seen as the act that founded a still utopian and never achieved Greek identity which is to stand in opposition with dictatorships and domination : a for ever rebellious and self-governing Greece, a complex but generous country, which is close to its population and reluctant to accept to be a satellite of the Western world. The film will tell the story of this uncommon example and of the society which allowed "Rebetiko" to expand.
